FAQs about the pulsed dye V Beam Laser

What is Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL)?

The Dermatology Center of Newport’s pulsed dye laser, the V Beam, uses a 595 nm wavelength which perfectly blends depth of penetration into tissue and high absorption of hemoglobin. A 595 nm wavelength is used to treat tough discolorations and abnormalities, including reds, superficial browns, and even the most resistant vascular lesions.

What to expect from a PDL treatment?

Pulsed dye laser treatments are mildly painful.  Some patients say it feels a bit like a mild rubber band snap, similar to laser hair removal or other gentle laser treatments.  However, some patients do benefit from a topical anesthetic, which can be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment. At that time, the patient and providers will wear goggles to protect the eyes from the laser light before treatment begins.  The laser light is then used to target the cause of facial redness in the blood vessels, which absorb the light and eliminate red coloring in the skin.

Are there any side effects from V Beam Laser?

When treatment is provided by a licensed medical professional, V Beam side effects are extremely rare. However, some patients report some white spots, scarring or brown spots.  Again, these are extremely rare when this treatment is operated by a licensed medical professional who is well trained in the use of pulsed dye laser and is under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist.

Is there down time after V Beam Laser?

There is the possibility of bruising, swelling and redness, however those results should resolve within 7 days.

How many V Beam Laser treatments will I need?

The amount of treatments is dependent on the patient and what we are treating. A consultation with one of our providers is required to determine your treatment plan.
