Juvederm

Juvéderm is a smooth gel injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance in the body) used by our providers to effectively soften deep folds and lines in the face that develop over time. The official approval by the FDA for Juvéderm injections is for nasolabial folds, or more commonly known as “smile lines.”  In addition to the nasolabial folds, juvederm treatments are also commonly used to enhance the size and shape of lips.

What is Juvéderm Used For?

The primary use of Juvéderm injectable is to restore volume to your face.  Over time, areas of the face naturally lose volume as part of the aging process.  By injecting Juvéderm into these areas of the face, we can smooth out wrinkles and folds by adding back that precious volume that has been lost. Juvéderm can be used to improve the following areas:

  • Marionette lines
  • Corners of the mouth (smoker’s lines)
  • Lip borders and vertical lip lines
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Cheek definition
  • Under eye circles, tear troughs
  • Facial symmetry

It is a synthesized and fully degradable substance that does not require allergy testing prior to treatment.

How is Juvéderm Injected?

Using a very fine needle and a blunt tip microcannula, to minimize pain or discomfort, our providers will inject Juvéderm into the area where results are desired. The Juvéderm injections create volume by filling your lips, wrinkles or folds, for a more youthful appearance. When injected into the lip it can restore a more natural and plump look.

This treatment will take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many areas are treated.  Afterwards you may experience some minor side effects including swelling, bruising, redness and some tenderness. Most of these side effects resolve within 4 days.

Can Juvéderm and Botox Be Used Together?

Yes. Juvéderm injections and Botox treatments are complementary when used together.  Because facial lines are caused by muscle tightening and contraction, Botox effectively softens existing lines and prevents some new lines by weakening muscle contractions in the face.  Meanwhile, Juvederm softens lines by filling a wrinkle from underneath the skin. Studies have shown that combining Botox with Juvéderm yields longer lasting results. During your consultation our providers will let you know if this combination will work for you.

Juvéderm Frequently Asked Questions:

When will I see the results of the Juvéderm treatment?

You will see the fill results of the Juvéderm injections immediately after the procedure. Swelling can result in more volumization in the first couple of days, but the true result is noted after swelling resolution at about 4 days.

How long does a Juvéderm treatment last?

The duration of effect depends on which Juvederm treatment and product is selected for the area of treatment.  Lip filler lasts about 5 to 10 months and nasolabial folds last about 6 to 12 months. Once the effects of your Juvéderm treatment wear off, you are not worse off than before you were treated and it is safe to repeat the injections as necessary.

How much downtime is required after Juvéderm injections?

There is very little social downtime after a Juvéderm treatment. You may have some swelling, numbness and redness for a few hours following the procedure, but you will be able to do your daily activities as soon as you feel comfortable with how you look. However, if you get bruising, social and work downtime could be as much as a week and rarely two weeks.

Do Juvéderm injections hurt?

Yes.  Pain and discomfort are minimized by using a topical anesthetic 15-30 minutes prior to treatment as well as use of a blunt tip microcannula. Not only does it decrease the pain, but it also decreases the chance of bruising and is considered much safer.
