Dysport is a neuromodulator designed to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the glabellar lines (eyebrows), forehead creases and crow’s feet. Like Botox, Dysport treatments are used to relax the underlying muscles, reducing wrinkles. It has been shown to deliver temporary improvements to moderate to severe wrinkles on the face.
How does Dysport work?
During a Dysport treatment, Dysport is injected directly into the muscles that cause facial wrinkles, temporarily relaxing them. It stops the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines. Weakening the strength of these muscles will decrease the tension that they place on the skin allowing the wrinkles to flatten out. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled. The untreated facial muscles continue to contract normally, leaving your normal facial expression unaffected. The results of Dysport generally last 4 – 6 months.
What causes wrinkles?
As we age, wrinkles begin to appear as the underlying collagen and elastin fibers break down and wear out. Additionally, wrinkles appear over time due to repeated movements of facial skin through muscles, most commonly around the eyebrows, mouth and eyes. Dysport can be used to help prevent new wrinkles from appearing.
What Age Group is Dysport For?
Wrinkles are not only age related. Frown lines are “dynamic” – they happen because of the way a person’s face moves. Because frown lines are created by facial movements such as frowning or squinting, they may develop in younger adults. Dysport treatments and injections are used to treat moderate to severe frown lines in adult patients.
Dysport Side Effects
While side effects from a Dysport injection are minimal, the most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, bruising and nausea. If you do experience any of these side effects, inform the office but in general they will go away within a few days.
